So how lucky are the Nats to be terrible at just the right time to land big time pitching and hitting prospects in back to back years? The only 2 year stretch close to this would be Ben McDonald in 89 and Chipper Jones coming along in 1990. However, no one team has been able to acquire the type of power pitching and power hitting Strasburg and Harper provide in back to back drafts. With that said its on the Nationals now to get this kid signed and in rookie ball before seasons end. Unlike with Strasburg, theres no reason to rest him.
As for the rest of the Nationals draft, I’d look for a college middle-infielder in round 2, hopefully WVU’s Jedd Gyorko(A Dan Uggla clone) will still be there when the Nats come up in round 2. Fellow Fansided blog Hail WV has some nice tidbits on Gyorko. If last year is any indication, I would expect the Nats to go college heavy early then take some big swings on High School athletes later on.
Tonight join the guys over at Call To The Pen for a lovely draft chat! No pants required!
