Despite all the rumors and reports from just about every major sports outlet it now appears that the Nationals are not in the running for veteran starting pitcher Carl Pavano.
Latest reports are saying that he and the Minnesota Twins are now closing in on deal that will keep him in Minnesota for the next two seasons. Pavano is coming off of his best season since 2004 having put up a 3.75 era over 32 starts with the Twins in 2010. His 7 complete games and 2 shut outs were both tops in the American League last season.
If Pavano can stay even close to his 2010 form it should be a good signing for the Minnesota Twins. Now for the Washington Nationals fans it may be a little disappointing to some because it was yet another starting pitcher that the Nationals were said to have been interested in but did not sign.
If Pavano does end up heading to the Twins like rumors say he will be than I would not expect to see any free agent signings of starting pitchers for the Washington Nationals during the rest of the off season. It would have been a good signing for the Nats but guys like Chien-Ming Wang, Jason Marquis, and Jordan Zimmermann can play up to their potential the Nats may be able to make do this season with what they already have.
