For the second time in three days the Washington Nationals managed to pull off a come from behind victory over the Philadelphia Phillies and did so in an interesting fashion.
Trailing 4-3 with two outs and down to what could have been the last strike of the game Ian Desmond blasted a 1-2 slider over the left field fence forcing the game to be sent in to extra innings. After a 1-2-3 top of the 10 for pitcher Sean Burnett the Nats offense led off the bottom of the 10th with a double (15) from Ryan Zimmerman. With Zimmerman on second and Morse at the plate the Phillies opted to intentionally walk the hot hitting Michael Morse to get to Jayson Werth. Werth who came to the plate 0 for 4 on the night advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd on a single to left field that loaded the bases for Danny Espinosa who struck out for the first out of the inning. Then with the bases still loaded Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Antonio Bastardo threw wild pitch that hit Jonny Gomes advancing all the runners and sending in Ryan Zimmerman for the game winning run.
In total the Washington Nationals offense put up 12 hits from 7 different players 4 of which had a multi hit game for the Nats.
game notes- Espinosa who finished with 3 hits including a home run (18) , 1 run and 2 rbis drove in his first run since July 17….. Zimmerman improved to 27 consecutive games having reached base
