Right-handed reliever Jeff Fulchino has reached an agreement with the Nationals on a split-contract for the 2012 season. Fulchino will receive an invitation to Spring Training in the deal and was likely brought in to provide organizational depth, rather than seriously compete for a spot in the team’s bullpen. The veteran had been designated for assignment by the Padres as the season came to an end, and he had the option to refuse a minor league assignment and become a free agent instead.
Fulchino, who just turned 32 in November, has spent the better parts of five seasons in the Majors, including the bulk of the past three in Houston. For his career he has a 9-10 record and 4.84 ERA in 148.1 innings of work over 163 appearances.
