Keith Law reports on Twitter that the Nationals have acquired SP Gio Gonzalez from the Athletics in exchange for catcher Derek Norris and pitchers AJ Cole, Brad Peacock, and Tom Milone. The deal has now been confirmed by San Francisco Chronicle writer Susan Slusser.
The Nationals appear to be paying a premium in prospects for a pitcher who, despite low ERAs, has the most walks in baseball over the last two seasons. However, he has also allowed fewer hits per 9 IP than the likes of Roy Halladay and CC Sabathia. He will slot in as a nice young lefty behind righties Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann, and is also under team control for 4 more years, although he will go through arbitration for each of those 4 years.
We’ll have more details and analysis on the deal later.
