Alex Meyer to Play in Futures Game

MLB’s All Star Game is just a few weeks away and while the game’s rosters aren’t quite decided, we’re starting to learn a few of the names who’ll be participating in the other festivities taking place that weekend.’s Chase Hughes reported late Thursday afternoon that Alex Meyer, Washington’s second pick in the 2011 Draft, has been selected to play for the U.S. team in the Futures Game.

In his first professional season, considering he signed too late after last summer’s draft to participate for any of the organization’s minor league teams during the 2011 season, Meyer is 6-3 with a 3.33 ERA, 3.6 BB/9, and 9.9 K/9 through 14 starts (70.1 IP) on the season for the Class-A Hagerstown Suns. The 6’9″ right-hander was recently named the South Atlantic League’s pitcher of the week, adding some early accolades in what hopes to be a promising career.

Having players participate in the game is nothing new to the organization. Bryce Harper and Brad Peacock both appeared in last year’s contest. Danny Espinosa and Eury Perez the year before.
