Rick Ankiel Designated For Assignment, Storen To Be Added To 40-Man

According to multiple sources, the Nationals have designated backup CF Rick Ankiel for assignment in order to make room for the return of reliever Drew Storen from the disabled list.

Ankiel has been used this season mainly as a defensive replacement, starting only 5 of the past 28 games in which he has appeared. Ankiel has also not impressed with his bat, hitting .228/.282/.411 in 171 plate appearances.

Storen is returning from an elbow issue that has kept him out the entire season to this point. In his few games of rehab across two levels of the minors, Storen has pitched 6.2 innings with an 8.10 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. While these numbers are uninspiring to say the least, Storen will hopefully return to his 2011 form in the majors, when he had a 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 43 saves in 75.1 IP.
