Matt Skole Named South Atlantic League MVP

The Class-A South Atlantic League named their season-end award winners early Thursday morning, with Washington Nationals third base prospect Matt Skole taking home the top honors. He was also selected to the league’s starting third baseman on their postseason All Star team. Skole led the league in home runs (27), on base percentage (.438), and slugging (.574) despite earning a promotion to High-A Potomac over two weeks ago.

The former Georgia Tech product, Skole had a solid first season in professional baseball last year, but has taken a big step forward in 2012. The 23 year old is batting .291/.429/.567 with 27 HR and 102 RBI in 504 combined plate appearances on the year.

Skole came in at #21 in the organization’s top prospect rankings, according to Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook. This season could certainly boost the former 5th Round (2011) pick’s prospect status a bit in the upcoming winter, but he’s still a ways away from reaching Washington.
