Jayson Werth Strains Left Groin

Jayson Werthleft the Nationals’ 7-6 loss to Colorado Sunday after straining his left groin running out a single in the fourth inning.

Werth blamed the injury on dehydration, a significantly likely cause given that Werth missed Saturday’s game with flu-like symptoms. He did not seem to consider the injury too serious and hoped to return Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, but Davey Johnson was less optimistic and was unsure as to whether he would require another DL stint.

The injury is not an aggravation of his past injury, a right hamstring that caused him to miss 32 games earlier this year. If Werth is out an extended period of time, the Nationals will be set back another step in their quest for offense despite Bryce Harper‘s imminent return. Werth is hitting .256/.312/.413 on the year.
