Hairston Starts In Hopes Of Offense Against Hamels

Last night’s poor showing against lefty John Lannan exemplified the Nationals’ struggles against left-handed pitching. Those struggles were one of the reasons the team acquired Scott Hairston, who has hit lefties well in his career. Hairston will make his Nats debut and lead off tonight while Denard Span, hitting .154 against lefties this year, will sit. Hairston is 12-30 (.400) against lefty Phillies starter Cole Hamels in his career. Hamels is generally regarded as a great pitcher, but has struggled this year with a 3-11 record and 4.58 ERA. The Nats will start Taylor Jordan, who has a 2.70 ERA in his first two major league starts but has yet to pitch six full innings. Here are tonight’s lineups:
