Nationals Sue Insurance Company Over Esmailyn Gonzalez Fraud

According to a recent Baseball America post, the Nationals are suing Westchester Fire Insurance Co. for not recouping them for the $1.4 million bonus they gave to Esmailyn Gonzalez, a prospect whose name and age were falsified. The Nationals also accuse former special assistant and head of Latin American scouting Jose Rijo of taking a $300,000 kickback from Gonzalez.

The story was big news in 2009, when Sports Illustrated revealed that Esmailyn Gonzalez was really Carlos Alvarez, who was four years older than he had claimed. Rijo was fired and then-GM Jim Bowden resigned shortly afterwards as the FBI announced they were investigating the Nationals for potential bonus-skimming, although nothing ever came of the case.
