Mesa Comes Up Short in Arizona Fall League Championship

The Washington Nationals Arizona Fall League players, play for the Mesa Solar Sox, who made it all the way to the championship game on Saturday. Mesa finished the regular season 19-11-1 on their way to the East division championship. They faced off against Surprise in the AFL Championship, and fell just short of winning it all, losing 2-0.

Getting the start for Mesa was Steven Souza Jr. in center field. He went 1-4 with a pair of strikeouts, and was also caught stealing. He did wind up with an outfield assist at second base, his only one of the fall. In the loss the Nationals had Brian Goodwin get a pinch hit appearance in which he grounded out. They also had Adrian Nieto get into the game as a defensive replacement in the late innings.

Mesa did have the Most Valuable Player of the league on their team in Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant. Bryant finished the fall with a slash line of .364/.457/.727. He is a magnificent player with a tone of upside. He could possibly hit the major leagues by the middle of next season for the Cubs and make an impact.

The fall comes to an end for Nats’ players with a heartbreaker, but they did get to play against some of the best young talent the game has to offer. We will have a full review of each player in the coming days for the readers that love prospects as much as we do. Stay tuned for those and much more as the offseason continues.
