The Nationals are reported to be interested in Short Stop Rafael Furcal, according to a text alert from ESPN.
The Nationals already have Ian Desmond at short stop, so Furcal will either be a bench option or possibly make the move over to second base. I expect it to be the bench option. The Nationals really like Anthony Rendon and it is his time to take the major amount of starts at second base. I don’t see the Nats’ giving it to Furcal coming off of an injury.
Mike Rizzo has said on multiple occasions that he would like to bolster the bench and Furcal could be the player to do that. He isn’t the player he once was as an Atlanta Brave, but he can still get the job done. He can also be a defensive replacement in the middle of the infield in the late innings.
Rizzo should be able to get him relatively cheap as well, since he is coming off of an injury. Furcal will get his choice of team, and you can expect him to pick a title contender, and the Nats’ fit that as well. We will see how the ball rolls and who gets Furcal to bolster their bench or for some teams interested, be their starting short stop.
