This deal will buy out the rest of Desmond’s arbitration.
Ian Desmond has won back-to-back Silver Sluggers and been better on defense the last two seasons. His power and speed have come together and he has now has back-to-back 20/20 seasons as well. He is becoming a solid shortstop that could be under the Nationals control through his prime if he can settle another deal in two more seasons.
In the last two seasons, Desmond has seen his slash line go from .253/.298/.358, to .280/.331/.453. He has improved and his numbers are showing it. He deserves this money that he is getting. He has proven himself more than once.
Not to mention, if he wins the MVP he will earn an extra $500,000, so that is just a little more incentive to be better in 2014 and try to do something no National has done before.
