Watch: Jose Lobaton Catches Foul Tip in Piping of Facemask

Traditionally a backup catcher, Jose Lobaton‘s main job is to ensure that his defense is up to par. Reserve catchers that kill opposing pitchers with the stick are hard to come by. More often than not, reserve backstops are defensive specialists.

This makes catching/blocking the ball behind the dish the No. 1 priority for Lobaton.

He enacted a different catching method on Tuesday night, as captured by the Washington Nationals in .GIF form:

That’s certainly not something you see everyday.

It also couldn’t have been an entertaining experience for Lobaton. I’ve never caught in my baseball career, but I can only imagine seeing a foul tip come within inches of my eyeballs. Yeah, I’ll stick to center field where it’s much safer.
