Our first Nationals player of the week for the month of June goes to Wilson Ramos

This week, at the beginning of their nine game road trip, the Nationals went 4-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds. While you could give this week’s award to Joe Ross for his strong outing Tuesday night against the Phillies (seven innings, one run, three hits, five K’s), Trea Turner (3-for-3 on Friday), or Daniel Murphy (.360, three home runs, seven RBI’s), this week’s award goes to catcher Wilson Ramos.

Ramos started five of the six games this week with Jose Lobaton starting Friday night’s game with Gio Gonzalez on the mound, but he had a pinch-hit double to leadoff the eighth inning and ended up scoring on a RBI groundout by Ben Revere.

This past week, the 28-year-old catcher was 9-for-20 (.450) with two home runs and six RBI’s. His best game of the week was on the first day of June against Philadelphia where he had the first of his two three-hit games.

More from District on Deck

On Wednesday, Ramos had singles in his first two at-bats, including a RBI single in the fourth that drove in Anthony Rendon. He would end up breaking the game open in the sixth with a three-run homer to right to put the Nationals up 5-0 against Adam Morgan.

Yesterday, Ramos and Murphy hit back-to-back home runs against the Reds as part of a five-run fourth inning that got the Nationals back in the game. Plus, his RBI single in the sixth ended up being the deciding run in the game that the Nats hung on to win, 10-9.

After a disappointing 2015 season, Ramos has bounced back in a big way during his contract year. He has a slash line of .350/.392/.569 with eight home runs and 31 RBI’s. Over his last 30 games, he is hitting .349 with five home runs and 19 RBI’s.

If you go by Baseball Reference and the WAR statistic, Ramos has a 1.3 WAR. If that number stands, that would be the third highest total of his career and his best season since his 2.4 WAR in DC back in 2013. The 1.3 is also third on the team behind Bryce Harper and Murphy.

A lot of the national attention around the Nationals goes to Harper and Murphy in the lineup and rightfully so. However, Ramos is making a good case to be one of the catchers that plays in the All-Star game in San Diego next month. In the latest All-Star voting update, Ramos is fifth among catchers, so Nationals’ fans, go out there and cast your votes for Ramos.
