The Washington Nationals erased an early 4-0 deficit against Noah Syndergaard as they routed the Mets, 11-4

After a long road trip, the Washington Nationals (45-32) were back home tonight to begin a three game series against the New York Mets (40-35). Even though the Mets took an early 4-0 lead against Joe Ross, the Nats responded with five in the third against Noah Syndergaard to defeat the Mets, 11-4.

A Neil Walker sacrifice fly got the Mets on the board first in the first inning. The Mets would eventually build the lead up to 4-0 on a Curtis Granderson RBI single in the second and a two-run single by Wilmer Flores in the third. During those three innings, Ross gave up nine hits (eight singles).

But, the Washington Nationals responded in the bottom of the third inning. Ben Revere singled and stole second and Jayson Werth walked to begin the inning. Then, Bryce Harper hit a RBI single and Daniel Murphy’s fielder choice cut the deficit in half.

Later in the inning, Anthony Rendon hit a two-run single to tie the game and Danny Espinosa put the Nats in front 5-4 with a RBI single to right. Syndergaard’s night would be over after the third. He gave up five runs on seven hits, struck out five, and walked three on 71 pitches (47 strikes) in the loss.

Murphy tacked on one more run with a base hit to right in the fourth, but the Washington Nationals next big inning came in the fifth. Espinosa tacked on his second RBI of the night when he drove in Rendon on a double to left.

More from District on Deck

After a Ross single, Revere hit a grounder to first that scored Espinosa, thanks to a bad throw to the plate by James Loney. Jayson Werth ended the scoring with a two-run double to center to extend the lead to 10-4. Rendon had the final run of the night when he hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning for his third RBI of the night.

As for Ross, he was able to settle down after the first three innings. Tonight, he went six innings, gave up four runs on ten hits, struck out seven, and walked one on 94 pitches (65 strikes) in the win.

Tonight, one of the stars of the game was Revere. On a night where Trea Turner was playing center fielder in triple-A, the current Nats center fielder went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, a RBI, and three stolen bases. As a team, the Washington Nationals had 17 hits and stole six bases (five against Syndergaard).

Over the final three innings, Felipe Rivero and Rafael Martin (called up today) shut out the Mets in the final three innings. Rivero did give up four of the five combined hits, but he was able to hold the Mets off the board in the seventh and eighth. Martin ended up throwing a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his first game of 2016.
