Today’s District Daily has an update on injured Washington Nationals players Joe Ross and Ryan Zimmerman and more on the Nats’ dominant defense this season.

Good evening DoD readers, and welcome to today’s District Daily. Get caught up on the latest Nats news and opinions with some great Washington Nationals articles from around the web below.

In today’s Daily, the Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes has an update on injured Nationals players Joe Ross and Ryan Zimmerman. As Janes writes, both players have been on the disabled list since before the All-Star Break.

More from District on Deck

Ross, who is on the disabled list with right shoulder information, felt good after playing catch on Thursday and is set to throw a bullpen session at some point this weekend. The Nationals do not need a fifth starter until next Saturday.

Here’s what Ross said about his progress, via Janes’ article:

"“I’m feeling better,” Ross said. “Feels like everyday, I’m feeling a little stronger. I don’t know exactly what the plan is yet — still have a couple days before I can come back.”"

Zimmerman has been on the disabled list since July 8 with a left rib strain. According to Janes, he was also playing catch in the outfield on Thursday. The first baseman believes he caught the injury in time to prevent a lengthy stint on the DL, but it’s not clear when Zimmerman will return from the injury.

Also in today’s Daily, MLB.com’s Bill Ladson discusses how stellar defense has helped the Nationals succeed this season. As Ladson writes, the Nats have the best fielding percentage in all of baseball (.990) and are making great plays on a nightly basis.

Be sure to check out both articles below, they’re definitely worth a read. And as always, stay tuned to DoD for all your Washington Nationals needs.

Injury updates on Joe Ross, Ryan Zimmerman

Joe Ross played catch in the outfield at Nationals Park Friday afternoon, at a decent distance best estimated at several yards beyond second base. He took batting practice with the pitchers, with rather convincing vigor, and hit several balls into the stands at a distance best described as “far.” In other words, he looked healthy, and will likely throw a bullpen session this weekend.

“I’m feeling better,” Ross said. “Feels like everyday, I’m feeling a little stronger. I don’t know exactly what the plan is yet — still have a couple days before I can come back.” Read full article here.

WASHINGTON — The Nationals displayed some glove magic on the field during their 5-1 victory over the Pirates on Friday night.

Take shortstop Danny Espinosa. In the fourth inning, Josh Harrison led off with a hard shot that Espinosa backhanded while on his knees. Espinosa was able to get up and throw out the fast Harrison at first base, which saved Stephen Strasburg‘s no-hit bid up to that point. Strasburg allowed the Pirates’ first hit of the game an inning later.

“It was hit hard,” Espinosa said. “It was going to give me an in-between hop. I tried to step back on it, so I could get myself in better position to get more of a long hop. I caught it. I knew I couldn’t turn back to my left because I rotated so far. With Josh running — he runs pretty well — I had to get rid of the ball.” Read full article here.
