This week’s DoDcast talks about the Washington Nationals waiving Derek Norris, the World Baseball Classic, and we preview the Mets

On the DoDcast last night, co-editors Ron Juckett and I started off the episode by talking about the big story surrounding the Washington Nationals this week. Late Saturday night, Jon Heyman of Fanrag Sports reported that the team would put Derek Norris on waivers.

Ron and I debated whether or not that was the right move by the Nats to get rid of Norris. Also, we talked about the weirdness of seeing him bat ninth in yesterday’s spring training game against the Tigers after the team waived him.

Then, the two of us discussed the first round of roster cuts that were made yesterday, which included third baseman Drew Ward, outfielder Andrew Stevenson, and starter Austin Voth. All three made positive contributions this spring and should play a part in the future of this franchise.

More from District on Deck

So far, this spring, some of the positives on offense have been Michael Taylor and Wilmer Difo.. They are two of the three players that have double-digit totals hit this year. Ron talks about how Taylor (a.k.a Mr. March) needs to step up in the regular season while I talked about how Difo is taking advantage of the extra reps while Daniel Murphy is at the World Baseball Classic.

After talking about Bryce Harper’s five home runs this spring, we looked at the one negative on offense and that’s Ryan Zimmerman (0-for-17). Is it time for the Nats to be worried about Zimmerman and will his job be in jeopardy at some point this season?

In terms of the closer search, Koda Glover has continued to impress as hitters are batting .063 against him this spring. The two of us look into the possibility that Glover is moving up the ladder in terms of when he will be the closer in 2017.

This week, we continued our look around the NL East with the New York Mets. Our guest for this show was the co-editor of Rising Apple, JT Teran. We talked about the Mets offseason, expectations for Michael Conforto and Matt Harvey, whether or not Jeurys Familia will be suspended, and his thoughts on Tim Tebow among other topics.

Finally, Ron and I discussed the two Washington Nationals on Team USA (Murphy and

Tanner Roark

) as they wrapped up the first round of the World Baseball Classic. We discussed why Murphy might’ve been benched the last two games and should Washington Nationals fans be concerned about Roark’s rough outing against the Dominican Republic?
