When the Washington Nationals granted Chris Young his release at the end of March, it was so Young could look to see if there were any other offers on the market.

Today, it turns out he didn’t like any of the options available to him and will return to the Nationals organization as the team announced that they have signed him to a minor league contract. Young undoubtedly wants to be back in the major leagues and being a sixth starter on a contending team isn’t a bad way to get back there.

From a Nationals perspective, Young is good depth for an organization that lacks starting pitching depth outside of their Major League roster. It was always a low-risk solution and the fact that Young came back shows that there is some respect between him and the organization.

There was some talk that the New York Mets, who have had a lot of injuries to their starting rotation would be interested but they chose to pass on Young, who spent last year with the organization.

Young will pitch in Florida at the Nationals minor league complex for a few sessions and then report to Triple A and pitch for the Syracuse Chiefs.

Zimmermann went 12-8 this year with a 2.94 ERA, his first without an innings limit after being limited to 160 innings in 2011 as a part of his Tommy John surgery recovery. <del>The terms of the deal are not yet known, but the Nationals filed for $4.6M in arbitration while Zimmermann filed for $5.8M, so the deal is likely to be somewhere around $5.2M.

</del>Update, 7:05 PM: The one-year deal is worth $5.35M.

The Washington Nationals signed minor league contracts with catcher Chris Snyder and relief pitcher Jeremy Accardo. The Snyder signing was reported by Jerry Crasnick via Twitter. The Accardo signing was reported by the team.

June 9, 2012; St. Louis, MO, USA; Cleveland Indians relief pitcher Jeremy Accardo (57) delivers a pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
Both include an invite to Spring Training and Snyder’s reportedly has an out clause if he does not reach the Major Leagues by a certain date. Snyder played last year with the Houston Astros. He struggled hitting .176/.295/.308 last year in 258 plate appearances. Two years ago he had a solid season, hitting .271/.376/.396 in 119 PAs with Pittsburgh. Snyder is a veteran backstop who can step in should Wilson Ramos need more time and is not ready for the beginning of the season and the team wants to have their other catchers spend time in AAA.

Accardo is a relief pitcher whose best season came in 2007 when he saved 30 games for the Toronto Blue Jays. Last year he spent time with the Oakland Athletics and Cleveland Indians pitching in 27 games with a 4.82 ERA. Accardo is 30 years old and is another depth option for the bullpen that will be useful especially with Zach Duke and Christian Garcia as potential starting options. Accardo isn’t a late-inning option anymore, but obviously in Washington he doesn’t have to be.

Two small moves but for a contending team, any bodies you have in Spring Training to cover for possible injuries especially as Spring Training begins is never a bad thing. Low risk moves with nothing to lose and possibly something to gain.
