Davey Johnson Wins National League Manager of the Year

The Nationals may not have won the big trophy, but they certainly aren’t leaving the 2012 season without collecting a substantial amount of hardware.

On the night after Bryce Harper was named National League Rookie of the Year, it was announced on MLB Network that Nationals manager Davey Johnson was the 2012 National League Manager of the Year.

Johnson obtained 23 of the 32 first-place votes, and 131 total votes, beating out second and third-place candidates Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy by 54 (77) and 70 (61) respectively. Baker and Bochy both led their clubs to division titles, Bochy via overcoming the luxurious, expensive Dodgers and then winning the World Series, however, Johnson led the Nationals to the best record in baseball (98-64) and did so while dealing with a plethora of injuries and controversy surrounding You Know Who.

Johnson became the fourth manager in Nationals history following Jim Riggleman‘s abrupt resignation in mid-2011. The club has a 138-101 record since Johnson was named manager, and improved on last year’s record (80-81) by 18 wins this year, setting the record for wins since the Nationals moved to Washington, D.C in 2005.

As reported by CBS’s Jon Heyman, the Nationals and Davey Johnson have agreed to a new deal to keep Johnson as the team’s manager for the near future.

After leading the Nationals to the best record in baseball this season, Johnson’s contract expired, although he still had a deal to act as a team consultant for 2013 and 2014. While the financial details and length of the deal are still unknown, one can speculate that the deal is likely fairly short, as Johnson will be 70 for this upcoming season, and has had multiple health scares, including a heart arrhythmia corrected in 2011.

Update, 4:45 EST: It appears that Johnson’s deal is for only one year, and that he will retire after 2013.

Davey Johnson Named Sporting News NL Manager of The Year

The Sporting News Awards are not the awards we’re used to hearing about, but they still carry their own meaning. For these awards, it is not the media who votes but players and managers. And Johnson, who won the NL Manager of the Year with the Orioles Buck Showalter winning the AL award, were voted in by 17 managers (9 NL and 8 AL, who only voted for their respective leagues).

Johnson was the third National to place in the top three but first to win. Bryce Harper finished third (behind Wade Miley and Todd Frazier) in Rookie of the Year voting by players, and Adam LaRoche finished second to Buster Posey in the NL Comeback Player of the Year award.

Johnson finished one vote ahead of Dusty Baker for the award. Thursday, Sporting News will be announcing the AL and NL All-Star teams and then on Friday the MLB Player of the Year will be announced. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) awards will be announced starting November 12.
