The first round pick has struggled in his career with the Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals and his start to 2013 didn’t go so well. He faced eight batters, retired one and allowed five to score. That was the difference in the game as the Nationals fell to the Atlanta Braves 9-5.

There were bright spots. Ross Detwiler started off strong in his first Spring appearance and Bryce Harper is showing signs that he might just be the best player in the National League this season. It is only Spring Training but Harper is driving the ball which is always a good sign. Anthony Rendon also had a two-hit game and is hitting .400 for the Spring. Ian Desmond (2), Chris Marrero, Sandy Leon and Tyler Moore had the other Nationals hits.

Bill Bray allowed a run in his second straight appearance and Jeremy Accardo and Cole Kimball pitched scoreless innings.

The Nationals fall to 1-2-1 and face off against the Miami Marlins later today. Dan Haren will be getting the start for the Nationals. A preview and lineups will be coming up in a few hours.

He spent the previous part of his career with the Detroit Tigers, making two appearances in the post season in 2011. In the ALDS he allowed no runs in his two appearances. In the ALCS, he pitched four innings, taking the loss in one game and had an ERA of 9.0 in the series.

February 28, 2012; Melbourne, FL, USA; Washington Nationals relief pitcher Ryan Perry (45) during portrait day at Space Coast Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brad Barr-US PRESSWIRE

The Nationals picked him up from the Tigers, and the 25 year old right hander did not impress after his call up to the Nats from Syracuse, pitching nine innings in relief and garnering an ERA of 10.13 in the process. He had a win in relief in his second game pitched for the Nats, but it was all downhill from there.

Perry started the year with the Nats in Syracuse as a reliever. He had a record of 1-1, appeared in eleven games and had an ERA of 4.50. He was called up to the big league club and made his first appearance May 1st, and his last on May 30th. After his month getting shelled in the majors, the Nats sent him to AA Harrisburg with the idea of turning him into a starter.

Perry spent the rest of the season with Harrisburg. He had thirteen starts for Harrisburg, with a record of 2-4 and a respectable ERA of 2.84, albeit against AA batting.

His next stop has been the Arizona Fall League. Unfortunately, against the Fall League players Perry has had his problems. He has started two games, lasting five innings in total. His ERA is 12.60, and has allowed seven earned runs in those five innings, with opponents batting .364 against him.

Perry is arbitration eligible in 2013. It is doubtful that the Nationals are going to offer him arbitration. Perry may obtain a contract with another team, but if not the Nationals may offer him a minor league deal to keep trying to develop him into a starting pitcher.

Season Highlight: In his second appearance as a National, Perry got the win pitching the eleventh inning of a game against the Phillies on May 4th. He allowed no hits, no runs and walked no one in a sparkling inning of work. The Nats scored in the bottom of the 11th, and Perry got to be the hero for one day.

Rosters for this year’s Arizona Fall League started to be unveiled across baseball on Tuesday, with the Washington Nationals announcing six of the eight players that they’ll be sending to the desert. Washington’s contingent will help comprise the roster for the Salt River Rafters, along with prospects from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, and Toronto Blue Jays.

The players headed to Arizona include right-handed pitchers Christian Garcia, Ryan Perry, and Paul Demny, infielders Anthony Rendon and Jason Martinson, and outfielder Brian Goodwin. The two remaining spots to be named are believed to be for another pitcher and another infielder, according to Nationals Prospects.

Rendon was an obvious choice, given how much of the 2012 season he’s missed thanks to an ankle injury in the season’s first week. At times this past Spring there was talk that he could eventually find his way to Washington before the season concluded. But now the extra at bats in Arizona may prove vital for his continued development and chances to appear in a Major League lineup in 2013.

Perry’s inclusion came as a surprise to many, considering the amount of MLB service time he’s accumulated over his career. In fact, by all accounts, Washington had to ask for and received a waiver in order to send him. The team has been converting him into a starter for much of the past two months and it would appear that they’d like to extend the experiment a few more months, despite the fact that as of yet Perry does not appear to be among the team’s September callups.
