The Washington Nationals bashed their way to victory on Tuesday evening against the Cincinnati Reds, taking down the home team by a score of 10-4. James Wood had another majestic opposite field blast while Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile each homered twice in their best individual games of the season.
Seemingly over his last couple of starts, the Nationals' game plan to combat Miles Mikolas' ineffectiveness has been to score a boatload of runs, as they have now scored 25 combined runs in his last 2 outings. There is no doubt at this point that there is a lot more reason for optimism than had been expected before the season, and there soon could be some more top prospects earning promotions in the near future.
Devin Fitz-Gerald (WSH #10 prospect)
The first prospect that needs some major attention is infielder Devin Fitz-Gerald. As part of the MacKenzie Gore deal, nobody really knew what to expect from the 20-year-old coming into this season. He demolished rookie ball, but his 10-game sample size in Low-A to end last season left a little bit to be desired.
After getting the chance to begin this season at High-A Wilmington due to the plethora of infield prospects the Nationals have right now, Fitz-Gerald has absolutely taken off. He has a .325/.451/.650 slash line, good for a 1.101 OPS to go along with 8 homers, 23 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. Perhaps most impressive is his 22:23 K:BB ratio, showcasing his elite approach. His talent has been on full display so far this year, and he even homered from both sides of the plate in last night's game, proving that he was deserving of a promotion.
Seaver King (WSH #8 prospect)
The other prospect that is seemingly on the verge of getting a major rankings boost is fellow infield prospect Seaver King. The 2024 #10 pick has absolutely broken out in a big way this year, and he has proven that he has mastered AA pitching at this point. His breakout has been anticipated by many for a while, and it is great that he is finally breaking out this season.
He is currently slashing .333/.421/.581 through 30 games, and has an OPS of 1.002. He also has hit 5 homers and 22 RBIs, and has begun walking significantly more than last year, with a 19:28 BB:K ratio. I've written about how he is changing the narrative around him already, and if he continues at his pace he might just find his way to Washington by the end of this season.
When do you think Seaver King and Devin Fitz-Gerald will be break into MLB Pipeline's Top 100? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
