It is obvious that the Nationals feel satisfied with their roster for 2011, as they have not recently signed any free agents they may have been in the mix to obtain. This team can not win a championship now and it is understandable that more evaluation is needed of some players on the current roster. Shairon Martis, Jason Marquis, and Yunesky Maya are all starting pitchers that could progress this season into strong 3,4,5, starters or improve their value for mid season trades. The patience of  Rizzo and company to execute their plan will avoid the blunder deals of previous management that have crippled this franchise from its beginning. Competitive and consistent championship franchises no matter the sport build their teams through the draft and bolster the roster with mid market value veterans.

Carl Pavano would be a nice addition to the Nationals starting rotation especially in the absence of Strasburg. Pavano can be a risky investment as seen by New York, upon receiving a nice contract from the Yankees his performance declined miserably from previous seasons with the Marlins. He did bounce back with Minnesota having a strong season as his ERA was under 4.67 for the first time in five years. Pavano’s best years were with the Florida Marlins, and the only way I see him coming to the Nationals is if he plays the sentimental card. Carl would chose the Nationals’ offerings  if he wishes to come full circle in his career, and return to the franchise that broke him into the league. I don’t think that is in his DNA, and the Nationals would lose out on another free agent starting pitcher. Pavano can give you about 6.2 innings per start and he went the distance last season seven times tallying half his career complete game total in one season. The Nationals do not need to force the issue, unless they plan to trade for a first baseman.

A reason to complete the Pavano deal is to offset the loss of pitchers if they plan to trade for a first baseman. Two teams that seem logical for the Nationals to deal with would be the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers. These are two teams that can chase down a playoff spot with a 3,4,5 starter and addition to their bullpens. James Loney or Prince Fielder would give the Nationals a superb defensive infield and add a strong left handed bat to the line up. That is the only scenario I see for the Nationals to chase the acquisition of Carl Pavano, so they can trade developing pitchers for a left handed hitting first baseman.

The Nationals not signing Carl Pavano would signal that the ownership is content to enter the 2011 season as is. This may not be as exciting, but the team is progressing over the last two seasons. It is not beyond reality that some of these pitchers on this 2011 roster could have a break out year. Marquis or Wang having a bounce back year returning to their dominant forms of previous seasons may put Washington in a position to play .500 ball. Maya, Zimmerman, or Martis may have a break out season and that would make the Nationals’ management look like geniuses.
