Coming off having been shut out in back to back games vs the Mets a game like Friday nights could be just what the Nats needed to finally turn around their slumping offense.
Entering Friday nights game the Nationals had a team batting average of .223 which was good for worst in all of major league baseball and were averaging just 3.65 runs per game (5th worst in MLB). For at least one night though that all changed Friday night as the Nats registered 17 runs on 19 hits including 6 of which were home runs. Both the 17 runs and the 6 home runs are single game records for the team since becoming the Washington Nationals.
What may be the most impressive thing about Friday night is that just about everyone was chipping in on offense. The Nationals had a total of 9 players with at least 1 hit and a total of 7 players with a multi hit game. Heck even LaRoche who failed to register a hit drew 2 walks and wound up giving the Nats 2 runs on the board.
Of the teams outing Washington Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa said “We showed today what we’re capable of . We got plenty in there. We have so many good hitters. We’ve got plenty in there. There’s more to come.”
Second baseman Danny Espinosa, catcher Wilson Ramos and right fielder Jayson Werth were the star bats for the Nationals.
Espinosa chipped in with 3 hits including a home run and a triple, 1 walk, 5 rbis and 3 runs on the night.
Jayson Werth had his first multi home run game of the season and drove in 4 rbis with 2 runs on 3 hits.
Ramos tied the franchise record with 5 runs on 3 hits and a walk with 2 rbis.
