As I wrote yesterday Nationals third base coach Trent Jewett was given permission to interview for the Mariners’ Bench Coach job. Well today, the Mariners have made it official.

Jewett has been in the Nationals organization for the past three seasons, in the minor leagues. Before that he spent 15 seasons with the Pittsburgh as a coach and he also played his entire career in the Pittsburgh organization. In his time in Pittsburgh he was the third base coach under now, Mariners manager Lloyd McLendon.

This affects the Nationals’ in many ways. They now have to add another coach to the staff, and are also in the running for players. This puts a lot of pressure on Nats’ GM Mike Rizzo and newly hired manager Matt Williams. They want to find the right guy to man the third base coaching box, for this World Series contender. Yes, I said World Series contender.

The Nationals aren’t under any time constraints but they do need to make a decision rather quickly. You don’t want to go the entire winter without a third base coach and leave everyone wondering what direction the team is going. Rizzo is currently at the GM Meetings, but expect something to happen within the next couple weeks, regarding the coaching staff.
