John Buck seems to be on the radar of the Nationals according to the Nationals website. Buck played for both the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates last season, combining to hit .219 in just over 100 games.
If he were to come to the Nats it would be because of his defense. He is just above league average in throwing out runners and has the ability to call a good game. As I wrote earlier, all it takes is a team full of average players and you will win a lot of games. If the Nats have to go to Buck because of an injury to Wilson Ramos, he should do just fine.
Buck isn’t fit to be an everyday catcher, but if he had to be he could. The Nats have had to use a backup catcher each of the past two seasons because of injuries to Ramos. Look for Buck to get a one year deal if the Nats do indeed go after him for the backup catcher role. Overall Buck would be a good option for the Nats in the long run of 2014.
