A year from now, the Washington Nationals host the biggest party in baseball, the All-Star Game. A wonderful boost to a beautiful city.

The Washington Nationals have plenty to look forward to as the team and the city are the next All-Star Game hosts.

As the city of Miami did a wonderful job showcasing the best and brightest in the game, mixed with the future and a moving ceremony honoring the past, now it is our turn. The city and the Marlins set the bar high.

Remember, the All-Star Game is a powerful reminder of where the sport of baseball sits with the country. The Futures Game shows where the stars of tomorrow will come while the Home Run Derby is embraced by casual fans by the millions.

More from District on Deck

Imagine next July an evening of fireworks as Bryce Harper faces New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge as the entire sports world looks on. With the Capitol in the background from the right angles, it will be a magnificent site.

And, if the effort given during the American League’s extra-inning 2-1 win is any sign, not having the game count removed none of the intensity of the game itself. It was a night of baseball royalty having fun with itself while enjoying the sport. You cannot ask for a better commercial for Major League Baseball than that.

Miami has worked hard to promote itself as the “Gateway to South America.” A city thriving in rich heritage with a world to offer including a deep love of baseball. Although the images of empty seats as the game wore on reinforced the city’s image of fair-weather fans, MLB and the Marlins are trying to reverse it.

Like Miami, Washington is misunderstood.

More than the Federal Government, and all the thoughts associated there, is a city oozing history and pride. What better way to showcase all the good in the District than throwing a massive sports party. With one of the best teams in baseball on the field, the Nats will make great hosts.

Nationals Park is a beautiful stadium. A mix of modern design with some throwbacks. Not the future retro design of Camden Yards in Baltimore or the 21st century coldness of new Yankee Stadium, those new to the place should find it charming. At least, they can munch on wonderful tater tots.

Although we hope the city and team will be in the World Series this year, the spotlight for playoff baseball is different and harsh. Mistakes magnified and story lines dominate. The All-Star Game focuses on the celebration aspect. The sport, the stars and the city get a boost.
