Washington Nationals: 3 keys for end of Spring Training
By Ron Juckett
FINE TUNING BASE AGGRESSION
When the Nats grace MASN this spring, we are treated to a baserunning clinic.
The National League is under notice Washington will take extra bases, swipe bags on command and raise havoc creating runs. However, fans watch multiple runners thrown out getting picked off a base or out trying to steal.
Overall, the aggression gives the Nats an extra edge. Any time a pitcher must think—and waste time—with a runner dancing off the bag while stumping a hitter, mistakes happen. Yes, Bryce Harper will get pitches to pound as tired hurlers figure out Trea Turner’s thoughts on first.
But, with aggression comes mistakes. Like with a pitcher forced to get extra outs after an error, nothing kills a rally faster than a mistake on the bases.
This is the last chance for coaches and players to get on the same page. Get those signs down and treat the remaining games actual action and not glorified practice.
This season has the potential for magic. Although silly mistakes do not matter in Jupiter, they will in New York.
All the more reason to get as many regulars in the lineup as possible. The less left for chance, the better.
