Everything went wrong for the Washington Nationals on Saturday. This includes Anthony Rendon and Victor Robles sustaining injuries during the game.
The Washington Nationals survived an injury scare after Anthony Rendon‘s x-rays came back negative.
“He’s just got a contusion, so we’ll wait overnight and see how it feels tomorrow,” manager Davey Martinez said in his postgame interview.
When asked about if Rendon will avoid the injury list, Martinez said he believe so.
Also, Victor Robles got banged up after chasing a ball in center field and crashing into the outfield wall.
Postgame, Martinez said, “He was fine, but we got more concerns about his shoulder. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow as well, but he said he was OK.”
It goes without saying that losing Rendon would cripple the Nationals offense.
Coming into today’s game, Rendon had a 17-game hitting streak that got snapped today after he left the game.
To date, Rendon is having an unbelievable season. He has a .371 batting average with a 1.222 OPS and a 208 wRC+. Entering Saturday’s games, Rendon’s 1.3 WAR ranked 4th among position players in the MLB.
While it sounds like Rendon won’t miss much time, if any, his loss would leave an MVP-sized hole in the Nationals lineup. After losing Trea Turner, the Nationals are suddenly thin regarding capable hitters.
That includes Robles, whose .883 OPS is surpassing all expectations of what was expected of him coming into 2019.
Brian Dozier, Matt Adams, Ryan Zimmerman, and Wilmer Difo all have negative WAR marks. Dozier and Zimmerman were primed to have great seasons, yet are falling embarrassingly short of the production of which they are capable.
The Nationals are set to visit Coors Field next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Perhaps a trip to the best hitters park in baseball will cure their slumps. Let’s just hope Rendon and Robles are healthy enough to join their teammates at the feast.
