The Washington Nationals are finding a little bit of a groove right before the conclusion of the 2026 season. For a year that has been filled with ups and downs, with some of the downs feeling like they have dragged on for eternity, it has been nice to see the Nationals win 4 straight games at home with a series sweep over the Los Angeles Angels and a shocking Tuesday night win.
As of yesterday, the Nationals have now matched their win total from 2023 and 2024 of 71 wins, and the team still has 10 games remaining to build even more confidence before the end of the year. With just 1 more victory, the Nationals can achieve their largest win total since their World Series win in 2019, which in itself is a crowning achievement for the new regime of the organization.
Last night's win came as one of the biggest surprises of the season so far, as the Nationals were going up against All-Star lefty Christopher Sanchez, and trotted out a lineup that did not include any of Daylen Lile, James Wood, or CJ Abrams. However, it was the first of those 3 who delivered his signature moment of the season last night.
Daylen Lile delivers go-ahead 3-run homer as Nationals stun Phillies
After not starting the game, the Nationals pinch hit Lile in place of Dylan Crews in the bottom of the 7th inning after Sanchez had been removed from the game. Righty reliever Jonathan Bowlan came on in relief of Sanchez with runners on second and third and only one out, and Lile promptly sent the first pitch Bowlan threw over the center field fence to give the Nationals a 6-3 lead.
For a Phillies team that has not yet clinched a playoff spot, it was a devastating moment, as they are now just a game up on the San Diego Padres for the final Wild Card spot, and 3.5 games up on the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are just on the outside looking in. The Phillies need all the wins they can get right now as they are just 4-6 in their last 10 games, and facing a team like the Nationals with their ace on the mound against a lineup missing 2 All-Stars felt like a game they had to have.

For Lile, the homer was his 21st of the season, and he has now racked up 85 RBIs as well in his first full professional season. His slash line is now up to .250/.302/.437 with an OPS of .740, and he has also tacked on 15 stolen bases and some very solid defense in left field.
Lile has had a knack for the dramatic early on in his career, as his late-inning homer against the Cincinnati Reds during a series earlier on this year comes to mind as well. However, last night's victory has to be one of the most pleasant surprises the team has had all year long.
