Fans of the Washington Nationals had an opportunity to sit back, relax, and enjoy watching last night's 2026 All-Star Game, where 3 of their players all got game action for the National League. We will have some more content coming out centered around how each player performed in the game, but nonetheless, it was great to see CJ Abrams, who started the game, James Wood, and Foster Griffin, who was added late, all get their shine on a big stage.
Although the first down was up and down for the Nationals, with the team heavily exceeding expectations overall, the overall consensus is that the organization is headed in the right direction. A big reason for that is the team's performance down in the minor leagues, where the organization has seen a massive improvement under the new front office across all levels. One member of their minor leagues actually called it a career a few weeks ago, and we felt he deserved his flowers on our site.
Tres Barrera announces retirement from professional baseball
That player who deserves his moment is Tres Barrera, who officially decided to retire from professional baseball a couple weeks ago. The 31-year-old backstop actually announced his retirement somewhat abruptly via social media back on June 22nd. As a former 6th-round draft pick out of the University of Texas in the 2016 MLB Draft, Barrera was one of the only picks from his class to make it to the majors with the Nationals.
He made his big league debut back in 2019, and ended up getting a World Series ring after appearing in a couple of games for the club, but he was essentially buried on the catching depth chart at that time. Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki split starting responsibilities at the time, and Raudy Read was given an opportunity first over Barrera to be the 3rd catcher.
However, Barrera would ultimately appear in a total of 57 games in the majors during his time with the Nationals, and he performed quite decently. Barrera slashed .228/.313/.310 with a .623 OPS to go along with a pair of homers and 14 RBIs. His best year came in 2021 when he received the most playing time, appearing in 30 games and making 107 plate appearances.
What was your favorite moment from Tres Barrera's career with the Nationals? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
