The Washington Nationals are doing all that they can to keep their season alive right now. After a stretch in which the team played horribly, including a 4-game sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves and then dropping 3 of 4 to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Nationals bounced back in a big way over the weekend.
They finished off a 3-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend, and are now slated to welcome the Chicago Cubs to Washington for a big 3-game series. Simply put, every series matters at the big-league level for a team on the fringe of making the playoffs, but that doesn't mean that things don't still matter at other levels of the organization as well.
Chris Hacopian makes professional debut for High-A Wilmington
Part of what makes the Nationals so intriguing down in the minor leagues at the moment is their various levels of talent, especially in the lower levels. Eli Willits, last year's 1st-rounder and #1 overall pick, is the cream of the crop in the system, but he is not the only high draft selection making noise.
Chris Hacopian, a local DMV product who was just selected with the #11 pick in this year's draft by the Nationals, made his professional debut over this weekend, and is already hitting the ground running. As a college bat, he received a more aggressive assignment by beginning his career in High-A with Wilmington, showing how advanced the Nationals believe his bat to be at this point.
He profiles as the kind of guy who could fly through the majors, although his long-term defensive home will be intriguing to see where it ends up. However, his debut at the professional level got off to a solid start, with Hacopian recording a single to right field in his second at-bat for the Blue Rocks, notching his first professional hit in the process.

It is an encouraging start for the 1st-rounder, and Hacopian is now part of an infield crop that includes fellow high draft picks and touted names like Willits, Luke Dickerson, Ronny Cruz, and Seaver King, among others, in the Nationals' minor leagues. Fortunately for Hacopian, given his college background and the fact that he is the first draft pick of the new regime, he will be given the proper time needed to develop as he works his way through the system.
