The Nationals and Yankees once again found themselves to be trade partners.

With Opening Day less than 48 hours away now for the Washington Nationals and baseball actually kicking off tonight, we will finally get a glimpse into what the organization has been working on over the last few months. Since the hiring of an entirely new front office and coaching staff, the team has been working on bringing in a ton of new talent.

That new talent has come from a lot of different areas, as some prized trade acquisitions like Harry Ford and Gavin Fien, among others, are set to be massive parts of the team's future. While neither of them will begin the season in the majors, there is a very good chance that they are both key cogs in the lineup within the next 3 years.

However, the Nationals have also made a few moves recently that are going to help shape the organization's depth for the upcoming season, and coincidentally, both have come from the New York Yankees. After acquiring infielder Jorbit Vivas on Sunday for prospect Sean Paul Liñan, the Nationals went out and acquired journeyman infielder Zack Short from the Yankees today in exchange for cash considerations.

While Vivas is slated to make the team's Opening Day roster, Short's case is a little bit different, as he will begin the season with AAA Rochester. This is seemingly nothing more than a depth move for the Nationals, who have been focused on rebuilding the organization's depth at all levels.

Short is an interesting acquisition, as he has appeared in 241 games since 2021, and has played in the majors for the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, and most recently the Houston Astros in 2025. He had signed a minor league deal with the Yankees earlier this offseason, and will now find a new home in Washington before ever suiting up in pinstripes.

For his career, Short has a .172/.271/.296 slash line, good for a .567 OPS to go along with 15 homers, 67 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. As a true journeyman and depth piece at this point of his career, the hope would be that the 25-year-old Short never has to appear in the majors with the Nationals, as his previous numbers in the majors have not been fantastic.
