New Nationals catching prospect Harry Ford had a strong start to his 2026 World Baseball Classic. The catching prospect had two hits and hit a game tying home run in the sixth inning in Great Britain's game against Mexico.

Great Britain ultimately lost to Mexico 8-2, but Ford played will and provided offensive firepower for the Brits. Mexico took an early lead in the contest after a solo home run after Braves infielder Nacho Alvarez jr. hit a solo home run, but Great Britain kept it close, and in the sixth inning, after Harry Ford went deep, it seemed like the Great British team had a chance at an upset. Mexico, though, scored seven runs in the eight and ninth innings, headlined by a Jonathan Aranda three run home run, putting any hopes of a Great British comeback t bed.

Even though Ford was born and raised in Atlanta, he is eligible for Great Britain's team since both of his parents are from the United Kingdom and is one of two Nationals competing in the tournament. The catcher joins Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm jr. as the two most notable players on the team. He is a key part of the team's lineup. Against Mexico, he hit third behind Chisholm and Royals outfielder Nate Eaton. Ford also has been a key contributor to Great Britain's international program for many years. Ford helped Great Britain qualify, then proceeded to to hit .308 with two home runs and a 1.246 OPS in the 2023 edition of the tournament.

The Nationals hope that Ford's tournament success will propel him to success with the organization this season. The Nationals acquired Ford this offseason in exchange for hard throwing lefty Jose A. Ferrer. Ferrer was a valuable piece, and the Nationals potential closer, so the team is hoping the Ford will be a worthwhile return. Ford is a former top prospect, and last year he had a .868 OPS with Seattle's AAA affiliate. He is a key piece of the Nationals future, and the team hopes he can reach success at the club level similar to his success with the National team.

Ford and Team Great Britain are set to take on Team USA tonight at 8:00. on Fox. Ford will be set to hit against reigning American League Cy Young Winner Tarik Skubal who is set to take the mound for the Americans. Hopefully, Ford will be able to continue his tournament success against this elite pitching.
