While the overwhelming amount of headlines not only from our site but also among the national media as it pertains to the Washington Nationals has been focused on the decision to fire both Mike Rizzo and Dave Martinez, there have been a few other headlines that have slipped through the cracks.
With that being said, there were a handful of roster moves that were announced by the team on Tuesday, and we have some quick hits on what you need to know.
Nationals ink reliever Luis Garcia to 1-year deal
Amid a vast flurry of roster moves announced by the club on Tuesday, the team officially announced the signing of reliever Luis Garcia, who is set to join the team in St. Louis for their upcoming series against the Cardinals.
While he has often been confused with the team's second baseman, Luis Garcia Jr., it should only get more confusing for Nationals fans tuning into the games, as the Nationals now have 2 players with the same name. However, despite their similar name, they could not be more different as players. While there is still 1 more Luis Garcia, who is a pitcher in the Houston Astros organization, the team will have to settle for having 2/3 of the Luis Garcia's in the big leagues.
Garcia, who is 38-years-old, is now on his 8th team, as he most recently pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this season. For his career, he has a 4.20 ERA and 1.437 WHIP, but he has not even been as great as his career numbers this season, with a 5.27 ERA and 1.829 WHIP so far in 2025. To clear room for him on the big league roster, the team optioned struggling reliever Eduardo Salazar, who had been absolutely brutal as of recently.
Keibert Ruiz concussed again
The 2nd major transaction was that Keibert Ruiz, the Nationals' starting catcher, is headed back to the 7-day Injured List after taking a foul tip off the mask in Sunday's game. To his credit, Ruiz stayed in for the entire game, but clearly was feeling the effects of us afterwards.
To take his place on the roster, Drew Millas was brought back up to the big league club, and he will likely continue to serve in mostly a reserve role, with Riley Adams scheduled to get the majority of the playing time while Ruiz is out.
Ruiz was injured back in the San Diego series after taking a foul ball ricochet off the dugout wall, and he hasn't been completely right since. With this being the 2nd concussion he has suffered in just a short time frame, Ruiz could be out for a little while, and the team must be careful not to rush him back like they did the first time.
Trevor Williams transferred to 60-day IL
The final move of note is that righty Trevor Williams, who was initially put on the 15-day IL just last week, was transferred to the 60-day IL in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for the signing of Luis Garcia.
He initially was placed on the IL with a right elbow sprain, but now it appears as if he will be out for much longer than initially anticipated, and there is a very good chance we have seen the last of Williams in 2025. The righty has struggled immensely in 2025, with a 6.21 ERA and 1.536 WHIP to go along with a ghastly 3-10 record.
Hopefully for his sake, Williams will be able to toe a big league rubber again in September, when he will be eligible to come off the IL, but there is a very good chance Williams is headed for a much longer recovery than the team had originally hoped.
