The Washington Nationals had been in a major slump over the past few weeks, and had stumbled back home to Nationals Park in search of a way to figure things out. After an abysmal road trip in which the team managed a measly 1-8 record while being swept by both the New York Mets and Miami Marlins, things finally bounced the team's way.
Nationals offense erupts for 13 runs in blowout victory over Rockies
After scoring 20 earned runs across the 9 games in which they were away, the Nationals bats scored 13 runs on Monday evening as they returned home. The team's offense performed extremely well, and was able to support their ace in Cade Cavalli, who was not quite at his sharpest throughout tonight's start.
Cavalli still notched another quality start, allowing just 5 hits and a pair of earned runs, and won last night's game to earn his 12th victory of the season. Additionally, he lowered his ERA to 3.21 and his WHIP to 1.21 as he continues to prove to the rest of the league that he is the true ace that this club has needed for years now.
Additionally, the team's offense bounced back in a major way on Monday to the tune of 13 earned runs on 13 hits, with several individual players having much-needed big games. The main breakout game was outfielder Daylen Lile, who finished the game 3/5 with 5 RBIs, and clubbed his 16th homer. His 5 RBIs got him up to 71 on the season, and the game also got him back up to an OPS above .700 in what has been an inconsistent first full season for him.
Every one of the 9 starters in the Nationals lineup except for Dylan Crews and Nasim Nuñez notched at least 1 base hit, but Crews to his credit did draw 3 walks, including 1 with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Nuñez did at least draw a lone walk, but did finish the game 0/3. Monday night went so well for the Nationals that even Jorbit Vivas had 3 hits and even drove in a pair of runs.
You could tell that the Nationals' bats were locked in as they walked 8 times and only struck out 6 times, and in order for them to try and claw their way back to .500, they will need to stack more games like this. With 9 games remaining on their homestand, the Nationals will have a good opportunity to save face as they try to march towards the end of the season.
