The Washington Nationals have to feeling pretty strange after Sunday afternoon's series finale loss to the New York Yankees. On the one hand, the Nationals far exceeded expectations in the first half this season, but on the other hand, the team could easily have a much better record heading into the All-Star break if they had even a slightly competent bullpen.

The team will now head into some much needed time off with a 48-49 record, but if you were to reverse the results of the 3 games they just lost to the Yankees, all ones in which they held a lead in the 7th inning or later, and you'd feel much better about this team overall.

Even factor in some of the other notable collapses, such as the 3 consecutive losses to the Philadelphia Phillies, or even the walk-off loss to the San Francisco Giants, and you'd probably be thinking this team is buying at the deadline without a doubt. However, as of now, it appears as if President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni is looking to make internal changes to upgrade the club for the time being.

1B prospect Abimelec Ortiz impresses in MLB debut for Nationals

One of the more recent changes that Toboni made was to designate recently acquired lefty reliever Matt Krook for assignment, and adding first base prospect Abimelec Ortiz to the 40-man roster. Upon this transaction, the Nationals promoted Ortiz to the big leagues to make his debut in front of his friends and family on Sunday afternoon.

After coming over to the Nationals' organization in the MacKenzie Gore trade during the offseason, Ortiz got off to a slow start for his new team, but has since been one of the steadiest hitters in the minors for the organization. The 25th-ranked prospect in the system slashed .235/.332/.481 overall, good for an .813 OPS to go along with 16 homers and 59 RBIs across 71 games, earning himself a call to Washington.

Ortiz drew the start for the Nationals at Designated Hitter, and he figures to probably factor heavily into the Nationals' plans in the second half of this season. His debut both in the big leagues and for the Nationals was a solid one, and he even collected his first big league hit after he smoked a 105 MPH double to left-center field, erupting in celebration as his loved ones cheered on from the stands.

In what was a tough game overall, Ortiz' big moment was a clear bright spot, although he ended up being optioned back to AAA Rochester after the game concluded. He likely will be back within a couple of weeks as the trade deadline draws ever closer, and we all know how Toboni loves to shake things up. He has a good chance to soak up some more at-bats from current bench guys like Andres Chaparro, Jose Tena, or Jorbit Vivas.
