The 2026 Washington Nationals are slated to finally play their first home game this afternoon against the back-to-back World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, and Miles Mikolas will take the hill for the home team today. He will be oppose righty Emmett Sheehan, and the Nationals will look to get back over .500 today.

While this series will definitely be a tough one for a club that has faced one of the hardest early schedules throughout the entire league, fans should be excited given what they have seen from the club so far. Combined with the youth of the team overall that is excelling like Daylen Lile and Brady House, among others, there have been some veterans that have chipped in as well.

A couple of those veterans just came over this offseason in Mikolas, Zack Littell, and Foster Griffin, and while we wait for Mikolas to make a larger impact, Griffin and Littell were solid in their first starts. A couple other veterans were signed this winter as well, and some of them have had slightly different paths.

One of those signings was a local product who played his high school ball at Georgetown Prep in Matt Mervis, who was expected to heavily compete for the first base job during spring training, but did not really end up factoring into the equation. That could be partially due to him playing in the World Baseball Classic, but the Nationals also just felt more confident in Andres Chaparro and Luis Garcia Jr.

Making things even more complicated was the fact that the Nationals traded for Curtis Mead earlier this week and optioned Chaparro to AAA Rochester, which did not leave much playing time for Mervis. As such, he was released earlier this week, and will not search for his next opportunity.

A former highly-touted prospect, Mervis has struggled to latch on at the major league level, and he will now be looking for what will end up being his 3rd organization in his career. While he has flashed some power in the majors, he has always carried a high strikeout rate, and his defense at first base is certainly also not good enough to give himself a chance to stick while his career .165 average in 261 plate appearances does also not help. Hopefully for Mervis he can find another opportunity elsewhere.

Where do you think Matt Mervis will go from here after being released? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
