Just like that, the struggles of this National are forgotten.

The Washington Nationals began their second half of the 2026 season with a huge bang. Actually, it might have been several bangs, as the team ended up dominating a game that looked like it was going to be a low-scoring affair early on, as with Cade Cavalli and Gage Jump both starting off the game well, it seemed like runs would be at a premium. However, that would not end up being the case.

Cavalli was great yet again, allowing just 4 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 9 Athletics hitters, but the Nationals really broke through after a solid first few innings from Jump. However, the story of the evening was the Nationals' offense, as the team ended up pummeling the Athletics in their own ballpark to the tune of a 23-4 victory for the road warrior Nationals. One slugger, however, stood head and shoulders above the rest of the lineup outside of Harry Ford, who his his first MLB homer.

Andres Chaparro puts together historic performance vs Athletics

In the span of one night, Nationals slugger Andres Chaparro has almost completely flipped the narrative of his 2026 season. For weeks, Chaparro has been discussed by many Nationals fans as needing to be replaced, as he had not been providing much offensively, which is where almost all of his value is derived from.

However, after Friday night's game, there is a good chance that fans will change their stance on Chaparro and the outlook of his season. After coming into the game with just a .167/.308/.278 slash line, good enough for just a .585 OPS, Chaparro finished the night with a .220/.352/.424 mark, which adds up to a .776 OPS overall.

Obviously, sample size has a lot to do with this massive jump, as he now has just 71 plate appearances under his belt this season, but so does his performance from last night. Chaparro finished the game 4/6 with a walk, 2 homers, and 8 RBIs. Despite the small sample size, the fact that Chaparro was able to rase his OPS almost 200 points in a single game is unbelievable, and it almost challenges a game many Nationals fans will remember from Anthony Rendon several years back, where he drove in 10 runs.

Chaparro might be a bat that frustrates fans a good amount of the time, but at the end of the day, the 27-year-old can flat out rake, and he got to put it on full display last night for the Naitonals in Sacramento.
