Nationals trade longest-tenured player to Yankees in exchange for 4 pitchers

The deal is done. ESPN insider Jeff Passan reported Sunday afternoon that the Washington Nationals have finalized a trade with the New York Yankees to send first baseman Luis García Jr. to the Bronx. The Nationals in return have received four players, all of whom are right-handed pitchers. The key returns are minor leaguers Jack Cebert and Ben Grable, who ranked 14th and 25th in the Yankees system according to MLB Pipeline at the time of the deal. Also included are MLB-ready relievers Yovanny Cruz, who turns 27 this month, and Jake Bird, a five-year veteran.

It's a big trade for the Nationals, who got trade season started a week ago when they sent infielder Curtis Mead to the Yankees' division rival Red Sox in exchange for left-hander Connelly Early. The Nats now deal from surplus on the other side of the infield in García Jr., who's had a breakout campaign in his age-26 season. While we wait to see what happens with Foster Griffin, who will likely either be extended or traded, the Garcia Jr. deal is not exactly one that came out of nowhere.

It's tough to see a fan-favorite go. Lui debuted in the majors in 2020, and has been in the big leagues without break (barring a brief paternity stint in 2025) since September of 2023. This year, he's broken out in a huge way, leading the National League in slugging percentage among all qualified hitters (4th in MLB) with a .277 ISO.

The Nationals now cash in on that success, bolstering the farm system and lengthening the floundering bullpen. Grable and Cebert are the prospects in the deal, both right-handed pitchers in Double-A. Cebert, 24, is a starter who conquered High-A and who's been pitching better at Double-A than his 4.90 ERA might suggest. MLB Pipeline and FanGraphs both assess him a 40 FV.

Grable, also 24, is a relief arm running an elite 31.5 K-BB% in 32 appearances this year in the middle minors. His 70-grade fastball is paired with a slider that has devastated hitters all year. He was 25th in the Yankees system with a 40 FV assessment. FanGraphs did not have him ranked in the Yankees' top prospects.

Cruz, 26, has been a minor-league journeyman but he's broken out at Triple-A Scranton this year, striking out nearly a third of the hitters he's faced in 31 appearances. In four MLB outings this year with New York, he's sat at 100 MPH on his fastball while throwing a wipeout slider and a splitter that has nearly broken Stuff+'s model.

Bird, 30, is a five-year MLB veteran. He came up with Colorado and posted excellent underlying numbers in his second year in the majors at age 27, and the Yankees acquired him two years later. Nothing's really come together, though, and he's been up and down from the minors all season. He'll join a bullpen that desperately needs something while flashing decent stuff. There's some upside in Bird for sure, and evidently Paul Toboni's regime believes they can get something out of him.
