Pair of Nationals rookies make stellar first impressions during memorable MLB debuts

Heading into the month of September, there might not have been a team in baseball that looked forward more to the calendar turning to a new month than the Washington Nationals. The month of August was one that was emotionally draining, as the club said goodbye to guys like Luis Garcia Jr. and Foster Griffin, while stockpiling more losses than they would have liked.

One of the best parts about the calendar turning over to September each year is the ability to have September call-ups, who can help impact a club for the rest of the season and also prove their ability to handle a cup of coffee in the big leagues. After lots of speculation about who the Nationals would decide to bring up, their pair of call-ups made a huge impact in just their first game.

Nationals rookies turn in historic MLB debuts in club's 9-5 win vs Braves

The 2 rookies who came up were Yohandy Morales, whose promotion we detailed yesterday, and lefty Jared Simpson, who we did not not post about initially due to it being announced later on than Morales' promotion. Needless to say, both rookies were ready for their moment, as they turned in performances that won't soon be forgotten by Nationals fans.

Beginning with Morales, the team's 2nd-rounder back in 2023 out of the University of Miami, he finished his first game 3/5 with a solo homer for his first ever MLB hit, and then added a double and single. He did also strike out twice, something that will have to be monitored during his stint in the big leagues as it was identified as his major flaw down in the minor leagues.

Nonetheless, it was a huge moment for the 24-year-old corner infielder, and he has waited a long time for his shot at the big leagues. Realistically, Morales can audition well and compete hard in spring training for a chance to make the team out of camp next year, and this was a great start for the guy that had an .882 OPS in AAA to go along with his 25 homers.

The other stellar debut came from lefty Jared Simpson, who turned in a fantastic MLB debut out of the bullpen for the Nationals. He pitched 3.0 innings in relief and was perfect, not allowing a baserunner and striking out 3 of the 9 Braves hitters he faced. The 26-year-old appeared in 44 games in the minors this year and pitched to a 2.30 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, while striking out 73 batters in 58.2 innings.

Simpson was also a 2023 draft pick in the 8th round out of Iowa University and rose quickly through the ranks from AA to AAA to the majors this year. Between Simpson and Erik Tolman, Nationals rookie lefty relievers have been impressing over the last few nights and are establishing themselves as potential pieces of the bullpen for the future.
