The Washington Nationals lost another game on Friday afternoon in their home opener, seeing their record drop to 3-4 overall. After getting off to a solid start, the reality of their difficult strength of schedule is beginning to catch up to the young club.

While the Nationals' offense has continued to swing the bats pretty well early on, they were once let down again by an abysmal performance from Miles Mikolas, who looks as if his days on the roster could be numbered. After surrendering a whopping 17 earned runs on 17 hits through just 9.1 innings so far in 2 starts, I don't think anyone would blame the Nationals for having some buyer's remorse.

But while us fans have to continue to watch him pitch poorly every 5 days, the fanbase can always look towards the future as a reminder of why we must endure the trials and tribulations of the current club. Taking one gander down at the prospect talent in the Nationals' system, and it's easy to see why there is so much optimism for the future.

Part of that future is a guy the team and specifically the new front office led by Paul Toboni is very excited about, which is why he was so highly sought after in the offseason deal involving MacKenzie Gore. That would be Gavin Fien, who is now a member of MLB's Top 100 prospects list.

With Fien's addition, the Nationals now have 5 Top 100 prospects on the list, as Fien joins Eli Willits (#13), Travis Sykora (#51), Harry Ford (#66), Jarlin Susana (#75), and now Fien (#98). Those 5 pieces alone could end up being cornerstones of the organization for years to come once they make it to the majors.

As for his pipeline grades, Fien was given a 50-grade hit tool, 55-grade power, 50-grade run, 60-grade arm, and 50-grade field for an overall 55-grade as a guy who can profile into any infield slot, but figures to see a lot of time at second base turning double-plays with Eli Willits.

So while the product on the field for the 2026 Nationals might end up lacking at times, hopefully Fien will be able to establish himself as a key asset for the team's future as he continues to find his way to the majors.
