In a press release published by the Washington Nationals on Thursday morning, the club has announced the launch of "NATS20," which is a season-long 20th Anniversary celebration. What does this mean for us Nationals fans? Let's take a look at the details.
In an excerpt from the release, the club will have a sweepstakes reward program for fans, which should be a lot different than anything the club has done in the past: "Highlighted by the Cheers to 20 Years Sweepstakes, the campaign features in-park giveaways, special alumni appearances and the chance for fans to relive their favorite memories from the first 20 years of Nationals baseball. Details of the sweepstakes — the biggest in Club history — will be unveiled next week when single-game tickets go on sale."
The club will officially unveil it's 2025 promotional calendar next week along with details of the sweepstakes, and I would guess that there will be some added wrinkles in commemoration of the 20-year anniversary. Whether that's bobbleheads, posters, or other unique memorabilia of the team's past, it will be interesting to see what the club chooses to give to the fans in order to make this season a memorable one.
This was what I found to be the most interesting new wrinkle for the festivities: "In 2025, Nationals fans will have the opportunity to select their favorite 20 moments from the past 20 seasons. The top 20 selections will be featured throughout the ballpark, including as new signage on the outfield parking garages, beginning on Opening Day. A panel of former players, broadcasters and staff will submit their first list for consideration, and from Jan. 15–31, fans can visit nats.com/NATS20 to vote on their favorites — whether it’s Howie Kendrick’s homer off the foul pole, Jordan Zimmermann’s no-hitter or even Teddy’s first win in the Presidents Race."
I will definitely be sure to vote, and I'm sure the nostalgia that all of us Nationals fans will feel from re-living these moments is going to be awesome. This is a super cool move by the organization as they look to get fans at the forefront of the festivities, and I can't wait to see how it plays out. I could definitely see there being some really awesome tributes, and maybe even some new things posted in and around the ballpark to help fans re-live some of the team's history.
If you are anything like me, you probably have a ton of different questions regarding the rollout and overall implementation of the 20th Anniversary celebrations, so we will just have to keep an eye on any team postings or updates. Hopefully the next major news that we get from the Nats is that they are signing a big name free agent like Alex Bregman, Christian Walker, or Anthony Santander.
Hopefully the 20th Anniversary season will be better than the 10th Anniversary season back in 2015, which, despite Bryce Harper winning the MVP, was an utter disappointment of a season that reached the lowest of lows when Harper and Jonathan Papelbon went at it in the dugout. Surely this season can't be worse, right?
What are you most looking forward to with the 20th Anniversary festivities? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
