As of the time of writing, the Rochester Red Wings have yet to play their Tuesday evening game against the Toledo Mud Hens, the AAA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Normally I wouldn't start out an article jumping straight into something going on down on the farm, but this time, it felt like it was necessary.
So, why is the Red Wings and Mud Hens game significant, you might be asking? Well, outside of the fact that both teams have Top 100 prospects who will be going head to head against one another in Seaver King and Max Clark, it will be the first chance us Nationals fans get to see a recently promoted prospect who might help out the big league club later this season.
Robert Cranz promoted for 2nd time this year alone; on cusp of majors
The guy who earned the bump was righty reliever Robert Cranz, who received his second promotion of the season on Monday within the Nationals organization, and now finds himself on the verge of making the majors. Given the Nationals' well-documented struggles with fielding a competent bullpen, there is a better chance than not that Cranz debuts in 2026.
While the Nationals continue to weigh their options as well when it comes to the trade deadline, perhaps dealing a couple of arms from their bullpen could also help open a spot for the 23-year-old righty. Cranz is unranked on the Nationals' Top 30 prospects list due to being a reliever, but make no mistake about it, the upside is legitimate.
Cranz has pitched to a cumulative 2.73 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 2 levels so far, and is now looking to conquer AAA next. He started the year with High-A Wilmington, where he struck out 27 batters compared to just 12 walks in 16.0 innings, before earning a promotion to AA Harrisburg, where he got even better.
For Harrisburg, Cranz struck out 23 batters compared to just 3 walks surrendered in 13.2 innings, and while the ERA slightly increased, his WHIP went down in large part to bringing down the walks issued. He now will get a chance to pitch for Rochester, where he might be able to continue working in high-leverage spots, as he has converted all 3 of his save chances so far in the minors this season.
Given that the Nationals do not really have a set closer of the future after sending off Jose A. Ferrer to Seattle this offseason for Harry Ford, Cranz might just find himself with a golden opportunity to emerge as the guy. But let's not run before we can walk, and monitor Cranz' progress with Rochester, while also giving him the congratulations he deserves.
What do you think of Robert Cranz getting a second promotion, this time to AAA Rochester? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
