The Nationals are off to a great start in Paul Toboni and Blake Butera’s first seasons leading the organization. The team is 38-35. They have one of the best offenses in the league. The team’s progression and development is ahead of schedule.

Despite the team’s success, they should be sellers at this year’s trading deadline. The team is still too far out of playoff contention, and they should be keeping all of their resources to focus on future contention cycles.

The Nationals are playing well this year. They are above .500, and they have a positive run differential, indicating that their success is sustainable. Still, the team is still 10.5 games back in the NL East. They are only a game back of a Wild Card spot, but it is still too early to determine whether the Nationals are a legitimate contender for the playoffs and this spot. Fangraphs only gives the team a five percent chance of making the playoffs. Moreover, the Nationals should only invest in players at the deadline if they are a legitimate contender in the playoffs. It would not be worth it to mortgage the future just to lose in the Wild Card Round. The Nationals should be buyers if they believe they can make a deep run. Realistically, all Nationals fans can admit that they will not make a deep run in the playoffs this year.

The Nationals also have pieces that would yield impressive returns if they traded them. CJ Abrams, for instance, is only under team control for two more seasons after this year. The Nationals are ahead of schedule, but they probably will not be a true playoff contender until 2028. By trading Abrams now, the team can get multiple pieces that will be contributors when the team is ready to truly compete for a championship.

This might be tough for Nationals fans to hear. After years of bad teams and losing seasons, this is the first year the Nationals are competent and fielding a team that can add at the deadline. It is easy to dream about trading for Tarik Skubal or another superstar. Nationals fans, though, need to be patient. The team has a bright future. They should not do anything to mortgage it now for success this season. This Nationals teams is fun to watch, and Nationals fans should enjoy the team this summer, but they need to be patient and dream of October runs in future seasons.
