Good morning DoD readers, and welcome to today’s District Daily! While the rest of the internet was freaking out over llamas and dress colors, Spring Training continued for the Nationals as the team keeps working to get ready for Opening Day.

In today’s Daily, MLB.com’s Jamal Collier discusses Jayson Werth, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder earlier this offseason. According to Collier, Werth is confident that he will be able to return from the surgery quickly and be ready for Opening Day.

Of course, if worth can come back in time for Opening Day it would be a huge boost for the Nationals’ offense. If Werth is not ready for Opening Day, however, it could open the door for players such as Michael Taylor to prove their worth at the big league level early in the season.

Also in today’s Daily, Collier discusses manager Matt Williams‘ first team meeting, which took place yesterday. Williams, of course, is entering his second year as manager and appears poised to lead his team to greatness.

Williams won the Manager of the Year award in his rookie season last year, and expectations for him to succeed are even higher this season. Whether or not Williams and the Nationals can accomplish their goals remains to be seen, but holding the first team meeting is certainly a step in the right direction.

As always, stay tuned to DoD for all your Nationals Spring Training needs. For now, start off your day with some great Nationals articles from around the web:

VIERA, Fla. — Jayson Werth served as a spectator for most of the Nationals’ first full-squad workout of the season Thursday. His participation was limited as he continues to rehab his surgically repaired right shoulder.

Werth participated in a few outfield activities although was not able to join his teammates for fielding drills or batting practice. But he remained optimistic about his chances to be in the Nationals’ lineup for Opening Day on April 6 against the Mets..

“That’s kind of my goal,” he said. “Again though you got to err or the side of caution. You come back too early and then you got a setback or something like that. It’s a fine line, but our trainers and doctors are on top of it. I feel like I got a good sense of where I’m at and where I want to be. It’s just a time thing. It’s good to get down here and have our guys looking at it and caring for it. And it’s just good to be back around everybody.” Read full article here.

VIERA, Fla. — At the top of the Nationals’ workout schedule each day during Spring Training, manager Matt Williams leaves a quote of the day for his club.

“The road to the World Series begins today,” it read on a cloudy Thursday morning, before the team’s first full-squad workout.

“We’re here to get to that ultimate goal,” Williams explained after the workout. “We’re not alone. There’s 29 other teams that have the same thought, so that being said I want to make sure we understand that, that’s our goal. That its our goal to be the last one standing at the end of it.” Read full article here.
