One of the most exciting and news-packed days of the Major League Baseball season is approaching in the trade deadline--and many teams have a choice to make: to buy or sell. The Nationals are definitely one of the more surprising teams this season, currently sitting at a 55-53 record and not too far back in the National League Wild Card race--tied with the Pirates for a game out.
I do, however, think the Nationals will be sellers more than buyers, but if the Nats do somehow win a few games before the August 3rd deadline, that can change and will be buyers to reach the Postseason. This article will discuss two players I think the Nationals could trade before the deadline. I think the Nationals' biggest needs right now are pitching help in both the rotation and the bullpen, as well as corner infielders.
Good as gone: Foster Griffin
In the preseason predictions, I predicted that now-breakout star Foster Griffin would be the Nationals' most disappointing player this year. Okay, I was very wrong. He is truly a breakout star. He got a well-deserved spot in the All-Star Game, and as it stands right now, I don't think the Nationals will end up in the Postseason. Griffin is controllable, and only on a one-year contract. If he gets moved to a World Series contender, he is the type of player who would yield a huge return, especially in the form of prospects to build the Nationals' future greatness,
Only time will tell who the Nationals trade and who they don't. If they are in a win-now mode as the 6 PM deadline on Monday gets closer, maybe they will use some prospect capital to get some players who can help the team make a Postseason push. As of right now, I believe the Nationals will be a combination of buyers and sellers.
Unlikely, but not impossible: Dylan Crews
The number two overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft has been a bit of a disappointment since getting called up, and it might be time to move him. Dylan Crews played a huge role in Louisiana State winning the National Championship in 2023 along with Paul Skenes, who went number one overall in the same draft class.
I do think Dylan Crews has potential to be a great big leaguer; I just don't know if the Nationals are the right team to develop him into the well-rounded player the team was expecting at this point. Crews has several years of team control left, so he could be traded for any number of pieces, but the team would likely prioritize pitching that is close to big-league ready.
