The Washington Nationals have undergone so much change over the last year that it might be hard to keep track of what players are even still in the organization. While the franchise as a whole has been focused on building up their farm system, some of the youngsters are already making great strides.
There have been several prospects who have gotten off to blazing starts for the Nationals in 2026, but perhaps none better than shortstop Ronny Cruz. At just 19-years-old, Cruz is now being bumped up to High-A Wilmington after an insane start to this season at Low-A Fredericksburg. It is an aggressive assignment, but it would be hard to say he hasn't earned it.
Cruz, a former 3rd-rounder by the Cubs back in 2024, was acquired by the Nationals along with Christian Franklin at the deadline last year in exchange for righty Michael Soroka. At the time, he was considered a very skilled infielder with a ton of potential, but it is actually showing up on the field.
Over his first 14 games and 63 plate appearances with the FredNats, Cruz posted a .333/.460/.627 slash line, good for a 1.087 OPS to go along with 3 homers, 14 RBIs, a 9:15 BB:K ratio, and an absolutely absurd 15 stolen bases.
What is even crazier is Cruz stole 12 bases just last week alone, and as a result he will now join fellow touted infielders Devin Fitz-Gerald and Angel Feliz with the Blue Rocks, which has notoriously been a much more difficult place to hit for prospects.
Cruz came into this season as the 25th-ranked prospect in the Nationals' organization, but he is now one of several Nationals' prospects that should see a massive surge in their overall prospect ranking. If Cruz gets off to a fast start with Wilmington, he could end up finding himself on the verge of making the Top 100 list, where he could join a handful of other Nationals' prospects.
It is an exciting time for the Nationals, and while we have to sit here and watch guys like Miles Mikolas play for the team now, we can rest easier knowing that guys like Cruz, Eli Willits, and Travis Sykora will be coming up the pipeline within the next couple of years.
What even added more intrigue to the overall profile of Cruz is that on Tuesday evening, in his first game for the Blue Rocks, the 19-year-old took the 4th pitch he saw at High-A to left field for a leadoff homer. After the start he has gotten off to this season, getting his stint at the new level started with a bang is truly an incredible way to begin.
what a start!
