Last night, Gio Gonzalez got his 2016 season started on the right note with six strong innings as the Nats won 2-1.

Due to the unusual schedule to start the season, Gio Gonzalez had to begin his 2016 season later than usual. He made his first start since March 27 against a Braves team that he faced in that final spring start.

Last night, it looked like a different Gonzalez from the one in years past that was struggling to keep his consistency. He went six innings, gave up no runs on three hits, struck out one, walked four, and picked up a base hit. Even though it was against the Braves, it was still a good start for the Nats’ left-hander.

Unfortunately, the Nats weren’t able to get anything going offensively against Jhoulys Chacin, who was making his first start as a Brave and the team had a few baserunning mistakes as well. However, it was Bryce Harper who finally got the big hit for the Nats with his two-run double against Eric O’Flaherty in the bottom of the eighth.

With last night’s win, the Nats are now 5-1 for the first time in their franchise’s short history with all five wins coming by two runs or fewer. Plus, they are the first DC team to start 5-1 since the 1951 Washington Senators. Nats fans, however, hope that this season ends up better than the Senators, who went 62-92 and finished seventh in the American League in ’51.
